From Charity to Lulia, an Origin Story

Once upon a time in California, in the unceded lands of the Chochenyo people, a little girl was born.  A child of the late 70’s, her parents had met and fallen in love at at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.  There they bonded over geeky endeavors such as math, geology, a love of lightning storm research, and a blossoming faith in Jesus Christ.  In short, they could be considered Jesus Freaks and geeks more than hippies.  Her parents believed in the power of names, and chose their baby’s name carefully - Charity Renee.  Loosely translated, it means Love Reborn.

Charity grew up under the weight of this name and alternately hated it and loved it.  The 80’s craze of personalized shoelaces, keychains, and hair clips was a dark time.  She longed to be named Jennifer, Heather, Michelle… ANYTHING but Charity.  Years passed, and the girl grew weary of using her consistently misspelled and misheard name.  Jody? Sherry? Chasity?  And heaven help anyone who offered up the name Chastity!  Though she had been raised in a strict Christian household, Chastity was NOT the vibe.

In her mid to late 30’s, after two divorces and a mercifully failed Austrian engagement, Charity met the strange, foreign man who would drastically alter the course of her life.  As a non-native English speaker, he often struggled to pronounce Charity in the early days, and unanimously declared Lulu to be the new name.  “How did Lulu evolve from Charity?” you might ask.  Lulu herself asked the same question.  The man couldn’t explain, but knew it to be so.  This was a common response from the man.  He was a wondrous enigma of clairsentience.  Routinely he was able to provide information on people he had never met before, and when questioned how it’s possible, his only answer to Lulu/Charity was, “you can do it too, and one day you’ll do it better than me.”

A little over two years into their relationship, the couple moved to Portland, Oregon (the unceded traditional village sites of the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other tribes along the Columbia River).  This new land was a wonder for Lulu/Charity who had spent the majority of her life in Dallas, Texas.  The air was different.  The plants were different.  Hills existed nearly everywhere she looked!  As she settled into this new world, another world began to awaken in the background.  Though she had always been a spiritual person, the framework of her Christian beliefs and upbringing had begun to crumble years prior.  The connection to God, to the Universe, to Source was a given… there was never a day that she questioned if there was more to life than this human form.  She knew it to be true that an even more wondrous space in the spirit realms existed and was able to be experienced by those with open hearts.

This realm had been relegated merely to Christian concepts in childhood, but now she was awakening to the full depths of the Otherworld and all it has to offer.  Daily walks with her also awakening neighbor proved to be a fertile ground for exploring these concepts.  As her previously atheist neighbor excitedly shared all the unfoldings and visions in her awareness, Charity began to untangle her own belief system, gifts, and memories.  Early experiences with a gifted energy healer and medium (Amy Kimmick of Temple Medicine Healing) revealed even more behind the veil.  Amy quickly told Charity that she was also a seer, and while it seemed farfetched, the flame of remembering was fanned.  Two more years passed, and after months of healings and mentoring, Charity’s clairaudience came first, followed swiftly by clairvoyance.

With the keys to this new world firmly in hand, it was time to explore just how the man knew so much.. and why he had chosen the name Lulu.  She knew this name was close to her known name in the Otherworld, but it wasn’t quite right.  The search for her name began in earnest in 2019, and the trail of breadcrumbs ebbed and flowed for the following two plus years.  Knowing that she had always loved writing cursive L’s, and knowing that the man was more psychic than he knew, Lulu was the initial springboard for this deep dive.

Aliens were an integral part of Charity’s early visions and introductions to the Otherworld.  No matter who she asked to do a reading for her, the conclusion was always the same - “wow you are SO connected to the stars!”  It had been years since she had watched the sci-fi movie The Fifth Element, but suddenly she knew she must watch it again.  If you are unfamiliar with this movie, here is brief synopsis, compliments of Wikipedia: “Primarily set in the 23rd century, the film's central plot involves the survival of planet Earth, which becomes the responsibility of Korben Dallas (Willis), a taxicab driver and former special forces major, after a young woman (Jovovich) falls into his cab. To accomplish this, Dallas joins forces with her to recover four mystical stones essential for the defence of Earth against the impending attack of a malevolent cosmic entity.”  When the young woman falls into the cab, she is unconscious, and when she finally awakens, she is startled and speaking another language.  She is able to communicate that her name is LeeLoo, and that she must meet with an ancient keeper of knowledge.  After many exciting twists and turns, it is ultimately revealed that LeeLoo is the fifth element, and that the fifth element needed to save the world is love.

“Ok, so, this is interesting,” Charity thought.  For starters, this is the only sci-fi movie she had ever liked, despite being raised by Trekkies.  Knowing what she knew about synchronicities leading to Otherworld revelations, she couldn’t help but think it’s remarkable that she grew up in Dallas, her birth name means love, and her proposed new name sounded similar to LeeLoo.  She pondered this in her heart and turned the name over and over again in her head.  Is LeeLoo the name?  Could she spell it Lilou so it was less of an obvious reference?  If LeeLoo is love and her name means love, perhaps she doesn’t even have another name?  She decided it was just another breadcrumb, and the search continued.

Winter solstice 2020 ushered in the next clue.  Inspired by the swiftly swirling energy, Charity decided on a whim to offer mini Solstice sessions.  It just so happened that a dear client named Kari was already in the process of reaching out for a session, and the timing was remarkably in alignment.  It had previously been revealed that Kari’s work with minerals and crystals was an integral part of her soul path on Earth at this time.  Her guides had revealed that she was an adoption agent of sorts, uniting people with the crystals longing to work with them via her unique Become Spellbound talismans. As the solstice session began, the unfolding vision quickly zoomed into southwest Africa.  The spot on the map was wondrously close to a point Charity had previously identified as a portal that needed healing.. could this client be tied to that portal?  The answer was yes, and a past life healing unfolded.

Again, the synchronicities called out for more research into the connection between gems and this area of the world.  A quick google search revealed that mines in this area were famous for diamonds.  Specifically, the Lulo diamond mine had previously held the record for the world’s largest diamond!  (Even more amazingly, on July 27, 2022, the very day this piece was written, news broke that the largest pink diamond in 300 years was just uncovered in the Lulo mine!)  Unclear how diamonds played into the name search, and convinced that the name Lulo was a little “too out there,” Charity tucked away this information and pressed on.

March 2021, one year after news of the pandemic sent the world on it’s new course, Charity set off to spend time alone on Fox Island.  The hope was to spend time communing with dolphins and whales and gathering more channeled information for an upcoming oracle deck project.  The first morning in the cabin, a mushroom sacrament was honored, and Charity allowed all the hints and whispers and nudges to flow in throughout the day.  A connection to the goddess Nyx and her children was one of the early whispers.   Digging a little deeper into the stories revealed the name Aether as a child of Nyx.  Delightful breadcrumbs surfaced as Charity then uncovered that classically speaking, aether or quintessence is considered the fifth element!  Next, ties to Africa were uncovered in the naming of Aethiopia.  A quick dive down a rabbit hold lead to research on Ethio-Semitic languages including Eritrean, Ge’ez, and Tigrinya.  The phonetic pronunciations charts for Eritrean sounded remarkably similar to a light language Charity had spoken since childhood!

Delightful discoveries in the rabbit hole continued to flow naturally throughout the day.  After solemnly mouthing Eritrean pronunciations and feeling the warmth of it on her tongue, she turned her attention back to the fifth element connection.  Hungry to learn more about quintessence, she headed back to Wikipedia and was struck by this passage:

Quintessence (𝓠) is the Latinate name of the fifth element used by medieval alchemists for a medium similar or identical to that thought to make up the heavenly bodies. It was noted that there was very little presence of quintessence within the terrestrial sphere. Due to the low presence of quintessence, earth could be affected by what takes place within the heavenly bodies.[14] This theory was developed in the 14th century text The testament of Lullius, attributed  to Ramon Llul.

The concept of Earth being affected by heavenly bodies and various influences from the Otherworld is key to Charity’s work as an energy healer!  It all felt deeply resonant and magical, and as if the culmination of the breadcrumb hunt was close at hand.  The name Lullius bore such striking parallels to Lulu, LeeLoo, and Lulo… could it be? Could this be the name?  Still licking her wounds from previous encounters with a Lillias, Charity was keen to change the name slightly to Lulia.

Now that was a name that rolled off the tongue!  Lulia! It felt right!  It felt real!  Could this be a known name?  And if so, what did it mean??  According to names.org, Lulia is Eritrean in origin, and means…. diamond!  At long last, the search was over!  Literally ALL of the breadcrumbs lead to this magical moment!

Unsure how to introduce this new name to the world, Lulia allowed it to wash over her in private for a few months, reveling in the delicious secret.  A profound dragon initiation finally lead to the public unveiling.  When a four story tall golden obsidian dragon appears and sends the words “I am Lulia Nuit” reverberating through your bones, you listen!

And so, with that, Charity Renee stepped into her life as Lulia Nuit.

I hope that the details of this slowly unfolding process illuminates the way for similar quests to be taken confidently and in awe, no matter how many years go by!

Endless gratitude to the dragons, and Nyx, goddess of the night and mother of Aether for leading me to the truth of who I am!
